Formation
The Path to Profession
Becoming a Lay Dominican takes time, and that's a gift. Each stage gives you room to pray, study, and discern with the chapter before taking the next step.
Before you begin: Inquiry
Come to an information session, ask questions, and get to know us. There's no commitment at this stage.
Stages
-
Postulant
6 months to 1 year
You attend chapter meetings regularly, meet with the formation director, and pray about whether this life is right for you. There's no obligation.
-
Novice
about 1 year
You're formally received into the Order as a member of the chapter and of the worldwide Lay Fraternities of St. Dominic. You keep studying, praying, and learning the Dominican way of life.
-
Temporary Profession
at least 3 years
You promise to live according to the Dominican Rule for three years. You can extend this stage up to six years total if you need more time to discern.
-
Perpetual Profession
after about 5 years
A lifelong promise to live the Dominican life. It isn't binding under pain of sin. It's a promise made freely and out of love.
